Goal-setting is fundamental to all forms of coaching and to its positive
impact with clients. While full-blown NLP techniques may not everybody's
cup of tea, the discipline of its approach to setting clear and actionable
personal objectives is something relevant to all styles of coaching. As a
coach, I find this framework to be an essential aide memoir to remind to ensure
I deal with fundamental performance drivers for a client as well as the
specific problem being presented in any given session. This is the route
to sustainable and transformation outcomes beyond simple problem solving and

How to get what you want!
- What specifically do you want? Stated in the positive. It’s easier to move towards what you want rather than away from what you don’t want.
- When, where and with who do you want it? Timed and contextualised. Give it a timeframe and context.
- Where are you now? Present situation associated. From what position are you starting?
- What will you be seeing, hearing and feeling when you get it? Outcome state associated, calibrate physiological shifts.
- What will you be able to do after you get it? Future state associated.
- Who is it for? Self initiated and self maintained.
- What resources and states are needed? Have you ever done anything like this before? Do you know anyone who has? Act as it now frame.
- For what purpose do you want this? Ecology check.
